Vacations In Nottingham

Bring to mind Nottingham and nearly all tourists recall the legend of Sir Robin Hood, his band of merry men and the Sherrif of Nottingham and though the story attracts increasing numbers of people year after year there is much more to Nottinghamshire and Nottingham than you may have thought. Indeed the city of Nottingham has a reasonable number of super visitor attractions making it a superb base for a weekend break and the following article examines the city and a small selection of Nottingham visitor attractions, and also some establishments offering B&B accommodation in Nottingham.

Nottingham is located in the county of Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands of  England. As well as the legend of Sir Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham, the city is also well known for the lace business especially at the time of the Industrial Revolution when it gained a worldwide reputation for excellence.

The Lace Market

At one time the center of the world’s lace industry, during the time of the British Empire, the Lace Market in Nottingham is, today, a protected heritage area. The area  features many fantastic examples of industrial architecture of the Nineteenth Century. The market wasn’t like a normal market, instead of having stalls and stall holders, it was more a number of warehouses and salesrooms displaying and selling lace. Following the downturn in the lace industry the area also fell into decline but, nowadays, the majority of the fine warehouses have been restored for residential use and other purposes for instance photographic studios and similar. The Lace Market is a popular visitor attraction.

Galleries of Justice & Shire Hall

Not too far from the Lace Market you will find the Galleries of Justice found in Shire Hall. Shire Hall is a Georgian-built civic building which features Neoclassical columns, pilasters and dome. The front of Shire Hall has, if you look at it closely, a spelling mistake Goal instead of Gaol. The Hall has two superbly preserved courtrooms from the Victorian period plus bath house, a women’s prison, old cells, an Edwardian police station and a prisoner’s exercise yard.

Nottingham is a great place to take a short vacation. There is lots to see and do within the city and an amazing number of visitor attractions not too far away. Nearby places well worth a visit include; Newstead Abbey, Hardwick Hall and Wollaton Hall.

As all all bed and breakfast accommodation in England, accommodation in Nottingham is mostly top class at a fair rate and many people choose to stay in Nottingham for part of their break and then elsewhere for the remaining days.
