The world’s third best-selling car
German carmaker Volkswagen has been producing a hatchback family car branded the Volkswagen golfing since 1974. Thru the six generations that it has been available, the line has been sold in different nameplates like Volkswagen Rabbit in Canada and the U. S. and Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico. For the remainder of the world, it is sometimes known as Volkswagen golf. This brand is not named after the game golfing [*SCO]‘golf’ is rather after the German word for Gulf Stream. The branding was in accordance with Volkswagen’s trend in the 1970s of naming their auto brands after well-known wind systems. Therefore, brands like Volkswagen golf, Volkswagen Bora, Volkswagen Jetta ( after the German word for Jet stream ), Volkswagen Passat ( after the German word for Trade wind ), and Volkswagen Scirocco ( after the German word for Sirocco ). The Volkswagen golf was introduced as a front-wheel drive auto which replaced the air-cooled version of Volkswagen Beetle. The idolization of this line has been enormous, that as of 2007, the golfing is Volkswagen’s top selling model. It’s also the planet’s 3rd best-selling auto, with 325 million units built as of 2007.
The golfing has had six generations of it produced since 1974. Most generations, particularly the initial ones had their bodies designed in hatchback style. Other styles have also been available though, including the estate style ( called the Variant, available from 1993 to the present, a saloon/sedan ( branded as Jetta, Vento, or Bora from 1979 onwards ), and convertible ( branded as Cabrio and Cabriolet, available from 1979 to 2002 ). The most recent generation of Golfs is called the golfing Mk6, which debuted at the Paris Motor Show of 2008. The look of the Mk6’s exterior is more aerodynamic and its interior is a mixture of the Mk4’s ( 4th generation golf ) luxury and the Mk5’s ( fifth generation golf ) usefulness and user-friendliness. The Mk6 has been sold in the US as golf, and not using the Rabbit brand anymore. A golf version to run on a half-breed 1.5L turbo diesel engine and electric motor is anticipated to get introduced by 2015.
